Relocation: What should I do before my movers arrive to pack?

You’ve probably must have heard many removal stories from friends and family, either they have been lucky enough to find a trustworthy removals company to do the job, or have decided to take on the challenge themselves and it’s been a total disaster.

The entire process of relocating to a new home or office requires a lot of organising, budgeting, and attention to detail to ensure the move runs as smooth as possible.

If you’re planning a big move, then the best advice is to start preparing well in advance, especially before the movers arrive.

We’ve listed the top more important things to do before your removal company arrives!

Organize your home

This is your opportunity to declutter and sell or donate all the items that are no longer useful to you. This will help to simplify your move and will save time and money that would be required to pack and ship those items to the new premises, only to be disposed of anyway.

List the items that can not be moved

Most removal companies will ship generic items such as furniture, appliances, books and glass, but items such as plants and food may not be suitable for loading onto the moving truck.

Make alternative arrangements for those items, or give away to friends and family to avoid waste.

Create an inventory

Create a detailed list of all the items you will move. This will help when you’re organising your stuff once the move it over. You can create a separate list for each room to make it easier when you are trying to locate items to use.

Spring clean

A big move is a perfect opportunity to give all your appliances and furniture a good clean as a lot of it would be covered in gathered dust over time. It’s always a good idea to strip the bedding and furniture cover pieces and back them separately to prevent damage during transit.

Labels

Labels are a good idea to use as they will not only help you when trying to find items, but it will also help the removal team, as they can see clearly what the contents are in each of the boxes.

All of the above preparations will be very handy on the day, but will matter the most is if you could be present during the moving process. You’ll be able to provide invaluable assistance to your removals team.

Learn how to keep your furniture safe and secure when moving!

Moving your belongings and furniture is one thing, but to get them there safely and free from damage is a task on its own. Whilst in the midst of organising the big move, many of us often forget the importance of properly packaging our items, so that they are able to reach the destination in without any damage.

To help resolve this issue, we’ve put together some of our top tips on how to pack your furniture to reduce the risk of damage.

1: Box it up!

It’s always best to keep separate boxes for each of your rooms, so you know exactly what is in each box. Try to find a box that is best fitted for the size of the items; a box too big can have a lot of empty space causing the items to move around in transit.

Another useful tip is to use scrunched up newspaper or bubble wrap to create padding in the empty gaps! Old clothing can also do the job.

2: Wrap each glass item individually.

When it comes to glass items you need to be extremely careful when packing as stacking items can cause the items to scratch inside and also brake in some cases. This is why it is best to individually wrap each glass item, such as mugs, glasses, plates etc. to keep them in the best condition.

3: Use quality packing materials

Always use good quality packing materials; after all, you are using it to pack your prized possessions, so you want the materials to be able to hold the items securely.

4: Disassemble furniture

If you have any furniture that you put together yourself, then it may be worth to disassemble the item. This would make it so much easier to transport, and would also save you money on storage space. Any loose screws and bolts should be placed in a plastic bag and attached to the item, this way the smaller parts won’t get lost.

5: Leave it to the experts!
